Next weekend, local band students, parents and supporters will gather around tables at the Field Trial Barn and shuck bushel after bushel of steamed oysters. They hope you'll join the fun.
Tickets are on sale now for the Fort Mill District Band Booster Club's Oyster Roast, Barbecue and Silent Auction 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 14. The event will benefit the band at Nation Ford and Fort Mill High schools, as well as the school district's middle school band programs.
A silent auction will be held featuring items such as gift certificates to local businesses, trips to Springmaid Mountain and Springmaid Beach, and gift certificates to area golf courses. The Oneppo Brothers will perform at the event, which has become a tradition among the band boosters. This is the third oyster roast the group has held, and they hope to continue sponsoring an oyster roast each spring and fall to generate money for the district's band programs.
"I think [the Booster Club] is one of the reasons we have such successful band programs at the high school and middle school," organizer Jamie Medlin said. "I think we play a real big part in that, to help supplement the program. We certainly can't take all the credit but we really try to help."
All-you-can-eat tickets for steamed oysters and barbecue are on sale now for $25 and must be purchased in advance. Hot dogs and soft drinks will also be sold.
Bring your own oyster knife and glove, Medlin said.

"We just have a blast," Medlin said. "Seeing all the people having a good time, it is so much fun just to watch the folks in the barn. All the fellowship, the people carrying their buckets of oysters, listening to good music, dancing. It's just a really nice community activity."

We are looking for someone to help co-chair the silent auction for NFHS, working with Michele Henderson from FMHS.

We are also asking everyone to help in soliciting items for the silent auction from friends, business contacts, etc. -- gift certificates, merchandise, etc.

We still need someone to coordinate ticket sales.

And of course, we need EVERYONE to sell tickets!!! If every band family can sell two tickets, we'd be well on our way to another successful outing.

We will also, as always, need help hosting the event - cooking, serving, parking, clean-up, etc. As easy as this is becoming, we still haven't quite figured out how to get the event to run by itself...
